Art & Research

Larys Frogier is threading with enthusiasm extended paths dedicated to shared knowledge based on his in-depth knowledge of art history, but also by dissolving the academic separation between research on art and artistic research. He engages with artists, curators, audiences and citizens as full contributors in the art-making, word-making, exhibition-making, and experience-sharing that are essential to sharing transversal pratices and knowledges. These contributors perform rich argumentative work, connecting the practice to broader theoretical, social and cross-disciplinary conversations.

As an art historian, Larys Frogier combines different epistemologies et methodologies from the humanities and social sciences. Knowledge on art is about the artwork in its materiality, context, meaning, experience, reception, and on-going reinterpretation. He has developped different researches dedicated to cultural activism, exhibition histories, and gender studies.

In regards to his positions as museum director and curator, artistic and curatorial researches become as important as research on art in the way that it challenges the very framework of what counts as knowledge. They open up forms of learning, experiencing, knowing and sharing that are embodied, sensory, debated from individual to collective perspectives. Artistic and curatorial modes of learning are thus fundamentally accessible through the act of making - making art, curating exhibition, experiencing an artwork, sharing questions and conversations collectively.

Moreover, as an art professional it is very decisive for Larys Frogier to conceive and implement with others new methodologies of working together for addressing various cultural, democratic, environmental and societal issues that cross our worlds today and that will determine our common future. He is currently developing long term research on an Oceanic Vision of Art with various collaborative research and creation projects with Europe, Asia, Africa and the Pacific, working with researchers (anthropologists, architects, artists, curators, writers, poets, scientists) and participating in seminars, symposiums, forums organized by different research centers (National Research Center for the Contemporary Arts - Lille University, School of Visual Arts Nantes Saint-Nazaire, Monash University, Goldsmiths College…).
